About Tirupati


Tirupati and Tirumala are twin cities located in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Tirupati is a pilgrim and educational centre whereas Tirumala is a sacred town located on the top of seven hills. The distance between Tirupati and Tirumala is 18kms ghat road.

Tirupati has an average elevation of 162 metres (531 feet). Tirupati is not only a piligrimage center but an educational hub. It is home to Several universities, including Sri Venkateswara University and Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (one among two women universities in India), Sanskrit Vidhyapeeth, S.V. Ayurvedic Medical College, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) a deemed univeristy etc. Apart from these universities, it has state government sponsored medical, agricultural colleges. Around 10 Engineering Colleges exist in and around Tirupati. It has nearly 50 UG & PG (MBA, MCA) Degree colleges.

Tirumala is the abode of Lord Venkateshwara, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu, located atop Seshachala hills often called as "Lord Balaji". The temple of Lord Venkateshwara is the richest Hindu temple and the second most visited religious center in the world following the Vatican. The Tirumala Hill is 3200 ft above sea level, and is about 10.33 sq miles in area. It comprises of seven peaks, representing the seven hoods of Adisesha, thus earning the name, Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrishabhadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri.

Tirupati, connected by air, rail and road, is 150 km north of Chennai, 700 km South of Hyderabad and 300 km away from Benguluru. The weather in December obviously cool but doesn’t require any course garments. Tirupati experiences Tropical climate and is usually hot round the year. But on the Tirumala hills it is quite cool in winters.
